Hi! My name is Sade Johnson, a Junior Marketing major from Chicago IL attending Howard University. Upon graduation, I hope to use my degree to be able to do something I where I can express myself creatively and give back to my community. Fashion has been something important to me since my mother let me pick out my first outfit. Its one of the main ways I convey my personality through art form. In the future I hope to offer new ideas to spark new trends in the industry, all while building a brand of my own.
How has attending an HBCU set you up for success?
Being able to experience the culture and atmosphere of an HBCU is a feeling like no other. Our discussions go beyond the classroom and I’ve been challenged to step outside my comfort zone to grow as a better student. I’m constantly inspired by those who share the same passions that I do, as we encourage and prepare each other for the real world. I’m grateful to be presented with opportunities & equipped with skills to excel in my future endeavors as I start my career.
How are you looking to contribute to the professional world upon graduation?
Upon graduation, I plan to work my way to becoming a Marketing Manager for one of the top companies in the fashion or entertainment industry. While doing this, I will also focus on building my own brand so that I could contribute to the fashion world with my own culture driven clothing line promoting sustainability & inclusivity. There are also other industries I hope to touch like Airbnb’s within real estate.
What is your dream job?
My dream job would consist of being able to perfect my craft in fashion & eventually providing a space for others to do the same. I’ve always been obsessed with editorial & runway fashion as a kid watching America’s Next Top Model, so being able to style or make designs for some of my favorite celebrities would feel like a huge accomplishment. I would love to oversee the bigger picture by having creative direction for accredited magazines like VOGUE or one of the biggest nights in fashion like the MetGala.
How do you express your personal sense of style through fashion?
I try to incorporate my culture and who I am as an individual to shine through what I wear and how I style myself. I enjoy being able to experiment with different styles of clothing and finding something that matches my personality. Through fashion, I am able to make a statement without even saying anything at all. From adding different accessories to trying out different color schemes my fashion sense is always evolving as I myself, am evolving to.
What role will you play in the future of fashion?
In the future I would like to continue to advocate for sustainable high fashion. I hope to be able to show and teach others how you can rework different pieces to create something new & unique. I believe up-cycling should and will become a huge factor in the future of fashion. While still staying fresh & on top of trends, you can reduce waste helping our overall environment. I will continue to support & hopefully create brands that will adopt more sustainable approaches as they create.
